Thank you for this package! It simplifies things significantly.

ORCID's brand guidelines say

For print, use of the ORCID iD icon in addition to the iD URI is encouraged, though remains at the discretion of the publisher, and a black and white iD icon may also be used where appropriate.

It would be nice if this package included a black and white version of the logo in addition to the typical green.

It would be fairly straightforward to add a colour/bw switch to my PR by using a keyval package to handle the options. This would keep the number of optional arguments down and make it more clear how they work anyway?

There is also an "unauthenticated" logo that they say should be used when the ORCID is unauthenticated. In the case of ORCID, their definition of authenticated is not that the author supplied the orcid value, but rather than the author authenticated themselves using the OAUTH login that ORCID provides. For complicated reasons involving the journal workflow, we don't plan to require this of all authors, so we want the option to use the unauthenticated logo.

There are two versions of the unauthenticated logo in svg:

Note that the unauthenticated logo uses a different color than the authenticated logo (the shades of green are different). A comparison of the colors is below.

I am curious where the svg path information came from in the orcidlink package. It looks different than what is in the official svg logo. I tried using svg2tikz and I got something that was different. In retrospect maybe using the path from the original svg is the best route, but I'm not a tikz expert.

@kmccurley the tikz code for the logo came from https://tex.stackexchange.com/a/445583/34063 . I assumed it was taken from the official svg logo and didn't look into it to verify.

I will think about the unauthenticated logo... I really wanted a simple package, but maybe it was not destined to be!

I think I found the origin of it - it's from wikimedia. The SVG path information is different from the one on the orcid.org site, but maybe they are just equivalent transformations. The one there is distributed under a CC0 license, though it also says it might be covered by a Trademark in some jurisdictions. It was apparently exported from Adobe Illustrator so it may have used some transformation from another format when it was created. It's weird that it uses Bézier curves instead of a circular boundary, because the two cannot be equivalent.

There are several ways to construct a tikz version from the SVG version. One way is to use the path.svg extension of tikz. Another way is to use the svg2tikz package (or use the same code as an extension of inkscape). I noticed that when I used the tikz path.svg library, I ended up getting slightly different results. Your existing logo looks accurate to me.

Maybe it just doesn't matter to have the unauthenticated version, because Springer is using the authenticated logo in LNCS, but I know for a fact that they don't authenticate ORCIDs in every article. After reading the display guidelines, the ORCID organization also says that the unauthenticated logo should only be displayed with the word "unauthenticated" word after it. I find that to be simply too ugly and confusing, so we would probably just drop the ORCID logo completely rather than use that. The goal of using ORCID is laudable, and it would be a shame if ugly design and demands for yet another authentication ended up holding back the use of ORCIDs. It has also been causing some problems for OJS users because they decided to require authentication for ORCID, so an article gets blocked from publication until every author authenticates their ORCID. This has caused some journal managers to stop collecting ORCIDs at all, which is not a good outcome. They probably don't realize how many academic authors lose access to an email address and password when they graduate or change jobs.
