[Discussion] Repository structure #320

Description

The subject of the repository directory structure has been brought up on some occasions in the bi-weekly telcos, and I think it needs a bit of spring cleaning. We currently have all the java source directories spread out at the top level, together with directories like 'documentation' and 'scripts' that also have subdirectories and files for each core system. In my mind, it makes sense that all of the java source directories go into the same directory (call it 'src' or 'core-src') to reduce the amount of information newcomers are presented with, reduce visual clutter in general, and have subdirectories that mirror each other in structure.

But I don't know what the consequences of such a change would be, nor do I know if others feel alike, so I want to bring this up to discussion to see if people agree, disagree or have other thoughts.
