Following the Python Array API Standard will allow us to visualize images in those arrays.
Most likely this would (in the first step, at least) involve reading in the image data and compatibility within BaseImage subclassed objects to access the data in these formats. Most likely the rendering stages would remain all numpy for now.
A PR for this would obviate the need for #805.
