It is essential to stay protected from abuse in the open federation. A serious Matrix distribution also needs to take the protections of its users serious and should come with sane defaults.

Describe the solution you'd like
As a quick improvement, documentation about recommended essentials can be added.

ESS C should bundle one of the current moderation tools, draupnir, meowlnir, or mjolnir. Adjacent features such as synapse-http-antispam should also be included. The docs should further educate its users appropriately about how to set it up, e.g. recommended banlists to subscribe.

Hey @HarHarLinks, thanks for raising this issue. We are actively discussing whether moderation tooling fits the product direction and how things fit together. Will let you know once the discussion concludes.

Apart from that, our Trust & Safety team is actively involved with the ESS Community distribution and will soon contribute documentation improvements to provide general T&S guidance for users.

You are right in that Trust & Safety functionality should not be gated. In fact, the tooling you refer to rather provides capabilities to centrally manage and supervise rooms, tailored to corporate use cases. The name we chose (Moderation) is a little unfortunate as it can lead to misunderstandings as we see here. Hence we will change that name soon.

Apart from that, I think we shouldn't de-rail the discussion here. The statement above still holds.
