Proton games hang for a while on launch #2614

Description

What Happened?

When the game window is created, it appears to freeze for half a minute before proceeding to run the game smoothly.

Some screen recordings exceed the size limit here, so here are links to Google Drive:

Native games

Bioshock Infinite
Counter Strike 2

These were recorded with OBS Studio.

Proton games

Subnautica
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

For these games I had to use my phone to record them. OBS Studio stops recording any changes on the screen shortly after the games freeze, and needs to be restarted before it can record anything again.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Launch a Proton-enabled game from Steam.

Expected Behavior

Observations:

  • On GNOME and KDE, all games launch instantly.
  • On elementary, only native Linux games launch instantly. I've never seen this issue anywhere else, and I distro-hop a lot.

OS Version

8.x (Circe)

OS Architecture

amd64 (on most hardwares)

Session Type

Secure Session (Wayland)

Software Version

Latest release (I have run all updates)

Log Output

Please guide me through collecting logs, as I'm not sure how to collect debug logs from Gala.

Hardware Info

  • AMD® Radeon RX 6600/6600 XT/6600M
  • Quad-Core Intel® Core(TM) i3-10100 CPU @ 3.60GHz
  • 16 GB memory
  • Linux 6.14.0-34-generic

Additional info

Steam is installed as a Snap maintained by Canonical. I've never had a problem with this Snap on GNOME or KDE.
