Add streaming links / embeds to talk pages

It's quite frustrating trying to navigate the schedule when you want to watch a talk remotely live, as there's no linkage from the schedule to the correct stream.

It would be really nice to embed the stream for a talk into the talk page, or at least link to the livestream page - maybe even at the correct time offset if it's in the past.

This would need a "talk starts in X" JS thing, or similar.

I wonder if we could embed relive for the talk while it's on, and hide it after it finishes...

@wlcx By "it" you mean EMF right? I had the same thought, but I'm not sure how we feel about making it look like the unedited feed is "official" like that...

no, I mean the talk - so e.g. before talk you'd have "talk starts in x", during/shortly before the talk you'd see the relive embed as this is at that point a live player with rewind back until the start of the talk, and after the talk (plus some grace time) you'd see a "wait for the recording" message

I'd strongly advise against embedding relive (we don't even publish embed codes for that). Ideally we just embed the stream during the talk (plus some grace time before/after, i guess), and then the final recording.

My 2cts: as long as you only embed the relive stream during the talk itself (plus the grace period that the relive records in anyways), it's probably fine to do so. We don't have an embed for relive; the HLS playlists are discoverable under https://relive.c3voc.de/relive/<slug>/index.json (feel free to look at the why2025 slug for an example) though.

In the end it would be quite a brittle solution. Relive recordings do not account for talks starting early, ending late, or the whole schedule being changed on short notice or getting systematically delayed.

The normal stream (outside relive) only keeps around segments for about 60s, so you would not be able to jump to the start there.

Yeah, the late/early thing would be a problem however we did it unless we had real start time marking. Would linking to the stream page be a happy medium?

It could also help if we had a website streams page which embeds the c3 live players to keep things all on the same website? Just a thought.

@hexchen I think we'd just link to the point-in-time in the relive stream based on our content system's knowledge of the time the talk started/ended. Is it feasible for us to jump to a UTC timestamp in that stream?

We don't currently embed UTC timestamps in relive streams, but it should be possible to add a EXT-X-PROGRAM-DATE-TIME tag to the playlist.
