Main Menu needs some kind of battery level indication

We currently need a third party app to show the battery status - can we fit an icon / percentage / charging status somewhere on the screen when the user is in the menu?

I think we should use third party apps to do this to allow easy customisation. we have no way of adding anything to the firmware apps right now and I think whatever we do should be useable from all apps. some kind of overlay icons would be good. We could have an official battery indicator app and some way of selecting which overlay icons are displayed. This way an app that wants to display that there's an incoming message or something could use the same mechanism.

I have been playing with an overlay when charge status changes, rather than a persistent display. Would that work?

I've created a background implementation that shows battery level and charge state.

I've had a go at a battery level indicator too, Battery Icon, manually shown/hidden right now. Could do with an auto start and some way for other apps to disable it.
