Hello! Could I please have an update on the situation of this PR? One of the packages I'm working with requires chaco as a dependency, but it currently conflicts with numpy 2.x that I'd like to support. The changes made in this PR are required for my package to run properly in the latest versions of numpy. Thank you so much!

I am finalizing the PR and as soon as it is merged, I plan to make a new release for chaco.
