Optional Waterfall

I have noticed that another firmware has recently added something similar to a waterfall, i have not tried it yet and i also dont know if a hardware mod is needed to use it or if its only a different visualization of the scan feature of this project, but i was hoping that others would be interested in discussing this and the possibility of implementing it on this project aswell.

In my opinion, a waterfall display only makes sense with an SDR that can display the entire bandwidth simultaneously. The SI can't do that. Therefore, I personally consider the whole thing a visual gimmick without any real benefit.

It is basically a Scan feature with history. Unfortunately it is too slow (a scan pass is done multiple times) and not very usable. The only interesting thing is how it is done on SSB where RSSI/SNR readings usually return garbage (at least in my experiments)

Hi Max,
I suspect even for the SSB waterfall it will switch over to AM for the scan and then just switch back to SSB on exit.
With two Si4732’s it would be possible to maintain the audio during the waterfall (scan), but I agree the feature is a little limited.

That is a good idea, will try. By the way the reverse also works - when I run a Scan pass around 7200 on LSB, it shows garbage below 7200 (ham band) but works just fine above that where there are strong AM stations from China.

I like the waterfall feature, knowing its limitations. An SSB voice signal with a suppressed carrier is difficult to observe with a one-channel receiver.

H.J. Berndt did a great job. You can switch between Waterfall > audio > waterfall and meanwhile retune the frequency, with the cache waterfall shifting accordingly. The waterfall provides much more information than a simple RSSI graph.

As the Mini is often used as a copilot receiver, this feature could be a nice valuable addition.

I would personally really like this feature and I think that HJ Berndt really did an amazing job with it.
