  • Automatic label and taint application
  • Post-join validation
  1. Environment-driven configuration - Comprehensive .env system with:
  • 70+ configuration options for all features
  • 5 deployment scenario examples in .env.example
  • Inline documentation for every option
  • Production-ready defaults
  • Validation before execution

⚠️ Partially Implemented

  1. Etcd backup - Configuration ready, automation scripts needed
  2. Terraform provisioning (basic template only)

❌ Not Implemented

  1. Monitoring integration (Prometheus/Grafana)
  2. Cluster upgrade procedures
  3. Security hardening (RBAC, PSP, network policies)
  4. Multi-cloud support (only AWS template)
  5. Automated testing/validation (unit/integration tests)
  6. Etcd backup automation scripts
  7. Certificate rotation automation
  8. NetworkPolicy testing automation
  9. BGP configuration for Calico (manual setup required)

🔒 Security Concerns

Critical

  1. No TLS verification: External manifest downloads without checksum validation
  2. Root execution: No privilege separation

Medium

  1. SSH key management: Hardcoded paths, no key rotation
  2. No secrets management: Sensitive data in .env (consider external secrets management)
  3. No network segmentation: Terraform missing security groups
  4. Plaintext join files: join.sh files contain tokens (mitigated with 600 permissions and remote creation)

Low

  1. Internet dependency: Direct external URL access without fallback

✅ Resolved

  1. Join token exposure: ✅ Fixed - JOIN_COMMAND no longer exposed in process list (created remotely with secure permissions)
  2. No audit logging: ✅ Fixed - Comprehensive logging system with rotation implemented
  3. Swap check only: ✅ Fixed - Full resource validation (CPU, RAM, disk, kernel) implemented

🎯 Recommended Improvements

Phase 1: Security & Reliability

  1. Implement secure join token distribution (Vault, AWS Secrets Manager)
  2. Add comprehensive logging to logs/ directory
  3. Implement rollback/cleanup procedures
  4. Add retry logic and error recovery
  5. Add post-installation validation suite

Phase 2: Production Readiness

  1. HA control plane support (3+ masters with load balancer)
  2. Etcd backup automation
  3. Certificate rotation setup
  4. Monitoring integration (Prometheus/Grafana)
  5. Complete Terraform modules with networking

Phase 3: Advanced Features

  1. Multi-cloud support (Azure, GCP)
  2. Custom kubeadm config file support
  3. Automated cluster upgrades
  4. GitOps integration (ArgoCD/Flux)
  5. Compliance scanning (CIS benchmarks)

🧪 Testing Requirements

Currently Missing

  1. Unit tests for library functions
  2. Integration tests for full workflow
  3. Smoke tests for cluster functionality
  4. Network policy validation
  5. Load testing setup
  6. Disaster recovery drills

📝 Configuration Examples Needed

Missing Documentation

  1. Multi-node .env example
  2. HA setup guide
  3. Custom network configuration
  4. Proxy environment setup
  5. Air-gapped installation guide
  6. Troubleshooting playbook

🔄 Workflow Analysis

Control Plane Setup Flow

Precheck → Set Hostname → Install Runtime → Install K8s Tools
→ kubeadm init → Setup kubectl → Install CNI → Taint Removal
→ Generate Join Command

Time Estimate: 5-10 minutes (depending on network)

Worker Join Flow

Precheck → Set Hostname → Install Runtime → Install K8s Tools
→ Execute Join Command

Time Estimate: 3-5 minutes per node (serial execution)

🐛 Known Issues

  1. No version compatibility check: kubeadm/kubelet version skew possible (version pinning mitigates this)
  2. Hardcoded network CIDRs: Conflicts possible with existing infrastructure (configurable via .env)
  3. Ubuntu-only support: RHEL/CentOS/Amazon Linux not supported
  4. No IPv6 support: IPv4 only configuration

✅ Resolved Issues

  1. No cleanup on failure: ✅ Fixed - Automatic rollback and cleanup procedures implemented
  2. Serial node joining: ✅ Fixed - Parallel execution support added (configurable via PARALLEL_EXECUTION)

💡 Design Patterns

Strengths

  • ✅ Modular library design for reusability (4 core libraries + config generator)
  • ✅ Environment-driven configuration (12-factor app principles)
  • ✅ Separation of infrastructure (Terraform) and configuration (Bash)
  • ✅ Idempotent function design (where applicable)
  • ✅ Configuration validation before execution
  • ✅ Dynamic config generation (no hardcoded values)
  • ✅ Error handling with automatic recovery
  • ✅ Comprehensive logging for observability
  • ✅ Secure defaults (file permissions, token expiration)
  • ✅ CLI-driven operation modes (install, cleanup, renew-tokens)

Weaknesses (Remaining)

  • No state management (stateless execution)
  • Some CNI configurations use upstream defaults
  • Limited multi-cloud abstraction
