Plan to release bbolt 1.5.0

bbolt v1.5.0 is supposed to be integrated into etcd v3.7.

Notable changes

• Add support for data file size limit
  • When a db write fails because MaxSize is reached, the db client should still accept future reads and writes #1108
    • Reimplement the feature of support setting data file size limit #1206
  • Clarify the effect of InitialMmapSize on Windows platform #942
• Performance improvement
  • Make statistics optional #977
  • freelist/hashmap: batch contiguous IDs when merging free spans #1179
• Improve user experience: avoid panicking or ensure it's recoverable by users
  • [db] move panic handling from goroutine to the parent function #1153
  • [tx] add recover in tx.check #1164
• Commands reorganisations
  • Cleanup the legacy Main command and move some common functions into utils.go #1081
  • Move all bbolt commands into a separate package/directory cmd/bbolt/command #1088
• Cleanup
  • db: drop unused txs list #973
• [Optional] Add support of page compression. It's a nice feature, but we need to ensure it's well designed & implemented. Currently I tend to regard it as optional for 1.5.0.
  • Add opt-in Snappy page compression to reduce database size #1149
  • Add opt-in zstd page compression to reduce database size #1159

Please let me know if I missed anything or if anything should be added.

Rough plan

• Release v1.5.0-alpha.0 after all of the above tasks are done (Optional tasks are not mandatory). It will be released against main branch
• Continuously testing bbolt v1.5.0-alpha.0 in etcd
• [Optional] Release v1.5.0-beta.X if there are any major or multiple minor issues.
• Cut branch release-1.5 and release v1.5.0-rc.X or 1.5.0.

Sounds good. I would love to see compression making its way to 3.7 etcd (it would be feature gated experimental), but I'm also happy to work through other architectural approaches in the meantime.

The two tasks (the bug and disabling InitialMmapSize for Windows) might be related, and resolving the second one first might make the first one easier. Please go ahead to take a look at the task (disabling InitialMmapSize for Windows) if you have bandwidth. Thanks

#1108 doesn't seem like a problem for etcd. Don't see anything is working on it. Should it really block etcd release?

Don't think #1108 is impacting etcd, thus I would recommend to move it to optional to not block etcd release. If the work is completed before we can merge it no problem, but we should not delay etcd release because of bbolt feature.

The etcd v3.7.0-beta.0 was released https://etcd.io/blog/2026/etcd-370-beta/.

Looks like we missed bbolt upgrade. Could we tag v1.5.0-beta.0 for the bbolt repo?
That would allow us to start testing it with etcd and ironing out the the kinks. Know the problems ahead.
This is what K8s is doing in kubernetes/kubernetes#139139

Would be great if we could release etcd v3.7.0-beta.1 with newest bbolt changes (no pressure).
