Extension breaks opening of normal images like `someting.png`

When trying to open a normal image file like something.png, the extension gives me the error Failed to load Document.: Error: Unable to load initial data.

This should IMO not happen b/c the extension should not be used for showing normal images at all but only for ones with extensions .excalidraw or .excalidraw.png etc.

I ran into the same issue, and in my case it was caused by VS Code automatically associating all .png files with Excalidraw.

You can check this in your user settings.json file (Ctrl + Shift + P → Preferences: Open User Settings (JSON)). I found the following entry:

"workbench.editorAssociations": {
        "*.png": "editor.excalidraw"
    }

I'm not sure how this setting ended up there, but removing the line "*.png": "editor.excalidraw" resolved the problem for me.
