Share a brief history of your project and organization
Project History: This project is a recovery effort to salvage a critical opportunity on the verge of being lost due to a partner's bankruptcy. It supports Utah in providing NASA research data to researchers for further study and analysis.
Organization: FTH is a team of participated in the ESPA program and currently hosting & managing nodes and infrastructure for other ESPA participants/SPs . Partnering with entities like the University of Utah, we handle large-scale, open-access data to grow the Filecoin ecosystem, ensuring secure, distributed storage for scientific and research communities.
Is this project associated with other projects/ecosystem stakeholders?
Yes
If answered yes, what are the other projects/ecosystem stakeholders
The project is associated with the University of Utah, NASA Ames Research Center, and the U.S.-Canada Center on Climate-Resilient Western Interconnected Grid (NSF WIRED Global Center). It supports the IEEE Visual Analytics Science and Technology (VIS) 2026 Challenge, involving stakeholders in scientific, academic, and climate research communities within the Filecoin ecosystem.
Describe the data being stored onto Filecoin
The data consists of 4 petabytes of NASA Ames Research Center climate data, stored on the Filecoin network. It includes datasets for the IEEE Visual Analytics Science and Technology (VIS) 2026 Challenge, enabling advanced analysis and visualization for climate prediction, power grid resilience, and environmental impact. The data is publicly accessible via AWS S3 API for scientific, academic, and societal use.
Where was the data currently stored in this dataset sourced from
Other

NASA
If you are a data preparer. What is your location (Country/Region)
None
If you are a data preparer, how will the data be prepared? Please include tooling used and technical details?
* Hot Storage - stored into MinIO & Ceph S3 object storage.
* Preparing the CAR files using tools such as Gographsplit & internal FTH tooling.
* Retrievals & restore from Filecoin network to the hot store using FTH products.
If you are not preparing the data, who will prepare the data? (Provide name and business)
Has this dataset been stored on the Filecoin network before? If so, please explain and make the case why you would like to store this dataset again to the network. Provide details on preparation and/or SP distribution.
Yes, a small portion of the NASA Ames Research Center climate data has been stored on the Filecoin network. In 2023, Seal Storage Technology and the University of Utah made over 200 terabytes of this data accessible using the National Science Data Fabric’s (NSDF) OpenVisus technology, as a proof of concept for decentralized storage and visualization with zero egress fees.
Why;
The client is eager to preserve the full 4-petabyte dataset, which has never been fully stored on Filecoin before. Only a 200-terabyte subset has been uploaded. This complete dataset is crucial for the IEEE Visual Analytics Science and Technology (VIS) 2026 Challenge, empowering global researchers to develop cutting-edge visualizations for climate prediction, power grid resilience, and environmental impact analysis. This effort aligns with Filecoin’s mission to safeguard humanity’s critical data and improve accessibility for scientific communities without needing specialized accounts or local resources. However, the client has been struggling with the previous Filecoin service provider. Which has failed to deliver causing setbacks. FTH are now collaborating closely with the client to ensure the dataset is successfully rescued and secured on Filecoin.
