i do believe its compiling everything from source and not using binaries....
im using xcode 12 and latest fink and latest macos catalina

theres no log that im aware of...

There is no more binary distribution, so all packages are built from source. It looks like your .deb was built, but broken somehow. Were there any messages about building the package further up? If not, it might be an older build, possibly compiled under older macOS and Xcode. Can you try to fink --validate --log-output rebuild libncurses5 and then retry the install (log file should be under /tmp-fink-build-log_libncurses*)?

so i should set up the working directory environment to the /temporary build folder, and try running those commands manually
, ok , how would one get the installer script tool to progress further or am i overlooking the thorough just build it manually page
ill figure that out... i assume so... , and im not on Mountain Lion, im not on Tiger, im not on Mojave im on the last Mac OS X Catalina 10.15 and the Latest Supported Xcode 12... im assuming is out of sync with its specific build requirements is it TCL also i just heard about TCL being different than python and all that that says like markup language etc has a purpose or a reason...

Not need trying to do anything manually at this point, just check if fink rebuild can do the job. Your output posted so far does not show anything about the build step itself. But since you obviously do have a package file in
/opt/sw2/fink/dists/stable/main/binary-darwin-x86_64/base/libncurses5-shlibs_5.9-20110507-1_darwin-x86_64.deb
perhaps the very first step is to check with ls -l if it was freshly built or left over from some previous installation, then maybe try dpkg-deb --info and dpkg-deb -c to confirm if something is wrong with that file.

Following up on @dhomeier 's instructions, in terminal, run these 2 commands from terminal.app:

dpkg-deb --info /opt/sw2/fink/dists/stable/main/binary-darwin-x86_64/base/libncurses5-shlibs_5.9-20110507-1_darwin-x86_64.deb
dpkg-deb -c /opt/sw2/fink/dists/stable/main/binary-darwin-x86_64/base/libncurses5-shlibs_5.9-20110507-1_darwin-x86_64.deb

If you get an error about dpkg-deb not present, try replacing dpkg-deb with /opt/sw2/bootstrap/bin/dpkg-deb (and then the rest of each command.

I've stumbled upon the same issue while installing Fink on Catalina. To take on the thread,fink --validate --log-output rebuild libncurses5 gave me:

Not so surprising as dkpg-lockwait would also complain not finding dkpg itself, so, as I had already /opt/sw created, I've run pathsetup.sh which added /opt/sw/bin in my PATH, to no avail. I've manually added /opt/sw/bootstrap/bin to PATH and this time of course dpkg and dpkg-deb could be found. Still, deleting /opt/sw and bootstrapping from scratch still gave:

Can you try dpkg -x /opt/sw/fink/dists/stable/main/binary-darwin-x86_64/base/libncurses5-shlibs_5.9-20110507-1_darwin-x86_64.deb /tmp/issue1213-test ? This should extract the deb into a directory in /tmp/issue1213-test.

The problem is that the dkpg/apt package fails to install. This is only obvious when building/installing with the validation on. I mentioned this previously wrt to apt and was told that the developers do not use apt much. I have had to install dpkg as an extra package. <#1216> <#1213> <#1196>

I have tried dpkg -x yesterday and it extracted the files without any problem. I had wiped /opt/sw and bootstrapping failed at the "usual" ncurses build (maybe it wasn't all that clear but I pasted in my previous message only the last five lines of the failed build). And then I tried fink rebuild libncursesand immediately after /opt/sw/bin/dpkg-lockwait -i ...

Now I tried yesterday night to do some random/desperate installs using fink install after the bootstrap failure, like dpkg-bootstrap, gzip, base-files, tar, actually any fink package that wouldn't depend on libncurses-shlibs... Then I issued fink selfupdate and was curious to see a libncursesw5.info file appear on the base folder. Tried to compile it and ... it worked. So I compared both info files who were almost identical except that Essentialwas flagged false on both libncursesw5 and the libncursesw5-shlibs splitoff. Did the same in the ncurses.info file for ncurses and the libncurses-shlibs splitoff which were originally flagged true (the libncurses splitoff had no Essential flag but BuildDependsOnly flagged true so I assumed it was probably related to this). And ... it worked: rebuilt libncurses and installed ncurses. Then I hacked some bootstrap checks to allow resuming and it did. So I have the impression that the issue is a "deb parameters" conflict one, seems like deb doesn't like two essential packages with one of them depending on the other or maybe it's a splitof package-generation issue, anyway there was never anything "corrupted" about the .deb, just dpkg probably lost figuring things out.

So I tried to understand looking at all the random installs I had done previously and my first choice was installing tar. And ... it worked again and resumed bootstrapping. So for me there were two hacks that worked: changing the flags and installing tar. Hope you can make sense of all this, but right now I have a working fink install (still had one issue during bootstrap where dpkg wouldn't install as dpkg-bootstrap wouldn't allow the md5sum file to be overwritten, but I forced the dpkg install and it finally completed the bootstrap)

there would be a reason i didnt look at it i mean im more confident in an approach to look at it now on catalina atleast since my laptops has more issues than a broken door i was meaning to ask is that because the installer and the installer from source methods use the same thing?

sorry @nieder to requote you but I can confirm now that 1) this error occurs at every bootstrapping of the latest fink-0.45-6 on a 10.15 Catalina fresh install with XCode 12.4 and JDK 21 both well set up, so wouldn't this be an issue for what is supposed to be a vanilla install on the latest supported OS version ? 2) unlike the hectic trials of days ago, I've narrowed down my current hack to have a working install just to adding the /opt/sw/bootstrap/bin path (for dpkg-deb) and having fink install tar (with dpkg-bootstrap option selected as it doesn't pre-require the libncurses5-shlibs) and then resuming, i.e. the apparent need of "false" essential flags in the ncurses info file was a false lead (which seemed odd of course as this info file had been around for years).
