Just a thought but would command completions like flux-core's be another way to solve this problem?
The short option space gets used up pretty quickly, and then it's hard to remember what goes with what.

The problem referenced above is that many commands dealing with user/queue queries have very verbose long options, which makes it cumbersome to reference them. #636 solves this problem greatly, but perhaps bash completions could be added as well.
