Where do I actually put init.lua?

In the readme you just say put this code into init.lua. But in which directory should I put this init.lua?

My friend told me I should put it in ~/.config/nvim/ but I don't think it did anything.

This is (usually) the correct location on linux/macos. What makes you think it isn't working? What have you tried and what was the result?
