How does checker frequency work?

Hey, quick question if anyone knows to save me diving into the source code -- if I set the checker frequency to something like 86400 (24 hrs) will that work? Or does it run on some kind of ephemeral timer process which will require me to actually have nvim open for 24hrs before it checks?

My aim is to only get notified max once every 24 hrs as while it's useful, it can get a bit spammy otherwise.
