Overriding colors for a specific style

I have some color overrides for background colors that I want to use for the "tokyonight-night" theme, but I do not want them to be applied when I switch to "tokyonight-day". In my current setup I set the color overrides with on_colors like:

    opts = {
      style = "night",
      light_style = "day",
      on_colors = function(colors)
        colors.bg = "#242424"
        ...
      end,
    },

which breaks the "day" style completely.
Is there a way to configure color overrides so that it is only applied to a specific style?

After reading #595 I was able to override the night style like this (put the code in colorscheme.lua):

local styles = require("tokyonight.colors").styles
---@type Palette
local darkernight_colors = {
  bg = "#000000",
}
styles.night = vim.tbl_extend("force", styles.night --[[@as Palette]], darkernight_colors)
