SF Metadata command not working

Summary

• Using sfdx command for e.g. sfdx:Retrieve This Source From the Org does no retrieve the metadata from Org even though the Org is authorized as afresh. Also same for all the deploy command.
• not able to trace it in the Output panel in the terminal

Steps To Reproduce:

1. Default Org Connected to sandbox
2. sfdx:Retrieve This Source From the Org

Expected result

• Org meta data should be retrieved

Actual result

• nothing is in progress

Here's an example of a set of required info that will pass the validation:
Salesforce Extension Version in VS Code: 60.13.0
Salesforce CLI Version: @salesforce/cli/2.42.6 darwin-arm64 node-v18.18.2
OS and version: MacOS Sonoma 14.5
VS Code version: 1.89.1
Most recent version of the extensions where this was working: 60.11.0

A few more things to check:

• Make sure you've provided detailed steps to reproduce your issue, as well as all error messages that you see.
  • A repository that clearly demonstrates the bug is ideal.
  • Error messages can be found in the Problems Tab, Output Tab, and from running Developer: Toggle Developer Tools in the command palette.
• Make sure you've installed the latest version of the Salesforce Extension Pack for VSCode. (docs)

What metadata are you trying to run that on?

check the output panel for the new Metadata ext (it doesn't pop up and steal panel focus by default like it used to)

does the progress notification "toast" pop up to say that it starts? (if you need a "it completed successfully" notification when it's done you can turn on (see #7182)

Several devs at my company are seeing the same issue. We use the "Deploy source to org" or "Retrieve source from org" commands and nothing happens. Not only is there no notification, but the commands just aren't running at all. We click and wait several minutes - no notifications, no deploy/retrieve completes, just nothing. We're all on 66.8.0 version of the extension pack.
