Not able to set default org for salesforce

Type: Performance Issue

Install this Salesforce Extension pack and CLI extension
Press "Ctrl+shift+P" and select "SFDX:Authorize an org" , enter sandbox details , login page will appear. Enter credentials, you will see "Authentication Successful" message. Go to Vs code and notification will appear- "Authorize an org successfully ran". Press "Ctrl+shift+P" and select "SFDX- Set Default org" and select the org which we just authorized. We will get default org successfully ran notification but will not be able to see the default org. Please assist ASAP

you can run sf config set target-org=<username|alias> (that's what that command should be doing).

are you choosing some kind of alias when you auth the org? Is it the same alias as the previous org? Can you try it on the current version of the extensions?
