GSoC 2021 Organization Application
Why does your org want to participate in Google Summer of Code? [No more than 1000 characters]
Fortran-lang is a young open source community, formed in December of 2019. As such, it is growing fast both in terms of projects and the number and activity of contribut ors. Participating in GSoC would provide a unique opportunity for students to engage in Fortran-lang at an early stage when paths forward are not yet paved and there is significant flexibility to how the projects can evolve. It would also allow the students to work closely with the core developers of Fortran-lang. By contributing to Fortran-lang projects, the students will directly work to improve the Fortran user experience and the ecosystem of tools and libraries. It would also provide them with the connections to developers across academia, industry, compiler development teams, and the Fortran Standards Committee.
What would your org consider to be a successful summer? [No more than 500 characters; New contributors, new features completed, more code written, better being able to guide new developers into open source world, etc.]
A succesful summer would mean that the students who participate in GSoC with Fortran-lang would:
- Carry out their chosen projects to completion
- Identify and propose new development pathways beyond their specific projects
- Be actively engaged and develop relationships with the core developers and the broader community
- Learn a lot of Fortran programming, modern software practices, and interacting with open source communities
- Continue participating with Fortran-lang after the summer ends
- Last but not least, have fun doing it
