Saved Clipart Does Not Appear in Emoji Section on First App Restart

• Draws a clipart
• Saves it
• Closes the app
• Reopens the app

The saved clipart does not appear in the Emoji section initially.

However:

• If the app is closed and reopened again,
• The clipart appears correctly.

While working on PR #1613 and ISSUE #1592, I investigated this issue and identified the root cause. The problem was caused by an asynchronous cache generation call that was not being awaited, which created a race condition.

Root Cause

In lib/view/draw_badge_screen.dart, the clipart cache was being regenerated like this:

fileHelper.generateClipartCache();  // ❌ NOT AWAITED

Since this function was not awaited, the UI could sometimes attempt to read the shared cache before it had finished rebuilding.

This created a short window where:

• The clipart file had already been written to disk
• But the cache had not been regenerated yet
• The UI loaded before the cache was ready

Because of this, the saved clipart sometimes did not appear after the first app restart, but showed up correctly after reopening the app again.

Fix

I fixed this by awaiting the cache generation:

await fileHelper.generateClipartCache();  // ✅ AWAITED

This ensures that the cache is fully regenerated before any UI component attempts to access it.

Shared Cache Architecture

The application uses a shared cache:

InlineImageProvider
 - clipartsCache: Map<String, List<List<int>>>

This cache is used by multiple components:

• SavedClipartsTab (grid display)
• VectorGridView (emoji/text insertion section)
• clipart_list_view (draw screen list)
• Any component reading clipartsCache

Since all components depend on the same cache instance, fixing the synchronization resolved the issue across the entire app.

What Happens Now When a Clipart Is Saved

With the await fix in place, the cache lifecycle is synchronized:

1. User saves a clipart
2. File is written to disk
3. generateClipartCache() rebuilds the cache
4. UI proceeds only after the cache is ready

Result:

• Save clipart → Cache updates immediately
• Close app immediately → Files already exist on disk
• Reopen app → Cache loads correctly on first access
• Emoji section displays cliparts correctly

Final Result

This fix is included in PR #1613, so the issue should be resolved once that PR is merged.

I'm Phanindra, preparing for GSOC 2026. I've analyzed this issue and understand the root cause - the race condition in the clipart cache generation.

I can fix this by adding await to the generateClipartCache() call in lib/view/draw_badge_screen.dart to ensure the cache is fully generated before the UI tries to access it.

I have Badge Magic running locally and can implement and test this fix immediately.
