pkg(8) - allow fast repo enable/disable

Hi,

it would be great to have 'fast' pkg(8) command to enable/disable a repository.

Like:

# pkg repo FreeBSD-base enable
# pkg repo FreeBSD-base disable

ok but where should we do that in place where the repo is defined ? in the /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos/*.conf where the repo can be disabled by any configuration? and if yes which name should we take for the file as all the files are considered ?

From what I know the /etc/pkg/FreeBSD.conf file should not be modified - and even official bsdinstall(8) installer during PKGBASE installation process does more or less this:

# echo "FreeBSD-base: { enabled: yes }" > /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos/FreeBSD.conf

So IMHO the pkg(8) to be consistent with that trend should modify /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos/FreeBSD.conf file - same as bsdinstall(8) installer.

you don't get it, what ever the FreeBSD doc says this can be overriden by any file in /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos, so impossible to get what you ask for in a non fragile way. and the name is also implementation detail many deployments uses different names.

I find it pretty powerful like this, but if someone comes with a design which allows to do what you ask for and keep the flexibility we have I will happily revisit. in the meantime I will close this issue, also not that in specific environment this can easily be covered with a very simple script, but keep in mind pkg is the package manager of many OS (including many downstream of freebsd) which may have different requirement that vanilla FreeBSD even if the main and principal target is FreeBSD.

It would be nice to have similar features between FreeBSD tools.

The service(8) command has enable/disable options so the same would be nice for pkg(8) instead of forcing editing the config files ... and yes, we can close it.

actually as I like the idea what I would do is a /var/db/pkg/repos_states which wins over the user overrides, and the commands listing the repository will explicitly state this is a "pkg override", the arguments will be enable, disable and reset (remove any override)

How should documentation for the ENABLED boolean change in the FreeBSD documentation portal, in pkg.conf(5), in the src tree, downstream, and elsewhere?

Documentation should distinguish between:

• a temporary override of an override
• a persistent override of an override.

Please don't overload the repo sub-command like that.
