Demo of protocol against updated spec

Per internal conversation, it would be nice to have an updated lightweight demoable version of the protocol to supersede the current Python demo, which still refers to the original implementation. We should avoid something too involved since production implementation still has some blocking decisions/research areas per our roadmap, but a lightweight poc demo using the benchmark implementation would be a good addition.

I agree. I view this as having the same goal in the implementation that #92 had in the specification: making it possible to evaluate discrete, iterative changes in a feedback loop with the manuscript, avoiding further big overhauls (like #92).
