What does this mean, they interoperate with each other? Does it negate the need to connect the wires to the CPU and the SID, or is there another benefit?

In principle things like launching the config tool from the SK64 menu, high quality DAC-mode for the mod-player, ... (need to find time to make all this up to date...)
