Use an upgrade slot to create a drone who will fly out to the nearest available asteroid, mine it with its relatively small capacity, then come back to dock and deposit at the station.
It has no defensive capability and will be quite dumb, and pirates (and natives) will want to destroy it, so some babysitting may be required.
In the future, this could be replaced with a more in-depth upgrade and crafting system where you can buy and 'craft' upgrades and drones instead of simply upgrading arcade-style.
