Odd filter generated dropping and adding links in one query

Seems correct but wanted to flag because it just looks so unexpected. Maybe this is actually the performance optimized big brain query.

Maybe this is really a workaround for a deeper thing of not being able to += and -= in the same query or at least in the same assignment. Obvs I can't speak to how expensive it is or isnt under the hood.
