How do I create a tado credentials file? What is the file format? I gleened it's a json file, but I have no idea how to create it.

Yes, it is well a JSON file.

You don't have to create the JSON file, the lib will do it for you. If the file is present it uses it, but if not it creates an empty JSON file {}.

Be careful, if the file is not properly a JSON file (bad syntax or whatever), the lib will fail because the lib could not serialize/deserialize it.

For me the solution was to just run the tado tool using the -f option and the file would be created after the first login and then I could use it for my python project. Is this the correct way to do it? Does my python project need to be able to write to the credentials file or can it be read only (helpful to know for docker containers)?

You did it in the right way.

The CLI argument -f or --credentials-file also works. The related code: https://github.com/germainlefebvre4/libtado/blob/master/libtado/__main__.py#L16

The lib must have write access to the credentials JSON file to edit and update the refresh token inside. As you are in Docker container, you should think about storing it on your disk and mount it in your container to avoid re-authentication when the container will restart and lose the data.
