Matter Dropping its Auth after last Obsidian update

As of the last Obsidian update, plugin is dropping its authorization to Matter, I think when it tries to initiate its first sync. I've founds it's fairly common to need to reauth after an update, but its usually just a matter of scanning the QR code again and sync reinitiates.

@pwflint when you say the plugin "is dropping its authorization to Matter" do you mean that you have to re-authenticate with Matter every time you sync?

If so, that is certainly frustrating.

As context, are you syncing your Obsidian notes with any other devices? If so, what's the method of sync?

I’m currently unable to sync at all. I reauthorize via QR code as normal and get a green checkbox in the settings menu, but Matter never actually syncs. Typically I get a “Syncing with Matter” dialog about a minute after authorizing but haven’t seen one since I noticed this issue. When the dialog fails to pop up, I go back into the settings menu and am asked to reauthorize again.

I sync my notes across all devices via iCloud. Matter plug-in is enabled on a laptop and a desktop.

@pwflint thanks for the information. I can't replicate on my end (just went through the Obsidian upgrade process), so I'm unsure what's going on here. It may have to do with the state of your plugin data file.

Would it be possible for you to email it to me?

1. Go to "Community Plugins"
2. Click the folder icon to the right of "Installed Plugins"
3. Select "Matter" from your filesystem browser
4. Attach data.json to an email to hunter at getmatter dot com

@hunterclarke I managed to resolve it before seeing your reply, it may have been a simple UI error on my end. However, just FYI, I ran into a number of issues post-auth:

• The plugin did not retain my template settings over the Obsidian update, or
• retain any previous sync history so it basically pulled my entire archive into the sync folder.
• Template editing was not available until I manually clicked the sync button, so basically everything synced according to defaults and not the template that I use.

If this is the expected behavior, I feel like it should be reversed in terms of UX. I should be able to customize the template before manually syncing. I have a decent set-up so the organizational errors won't take long to fix on my end, but not sure if other users will have the same experience.

Happy to separate these out into separate issues as well as share .json file (I'm assuming you mean the file inside .obsidian config?), but don't want to clutter your inbox if the issue stated has been resolved.

@pwflint that is not expected behavior. Settings should always be preserved, even across auth sessions. However, this does point to your data file being the source of the problem. It sounds like at some point, the settings file was erased or corrupted such that the default settings were applied (signed out, default template, etc).

It's hard to know what could have gone wrong here since the settings file is partially managed by Obsidian. But you might be able to restore the original settings and your sync folder if you have a backup via iCloud.

I have to do some thinking about how we could prevent this scenario from cropping up. Or at least mitigate the negative effects with what is in our control. I'll report back once I have a plan of action.
