Can't connect Redash 10.1 to Mysql 5.7 database

I'm trying to link Redash to a MySQL 5.7 db in AWS and Redash is complaining that the username/password is invalid (I know the username/password is correct and I've even tried brand new users both with and without passwords). What's interesting is that if I try connect to a mysql 8 datasource it works without any issues., which leads me to believe that it's an issue with how it authenticates to a 5.7 DB
