An idea to make following issues less burdensome

I've read the pinned post about users not being able to create issues: #3558 and I agree 100% and fully support this approach. I think it would be nice to go one step further and auto(?) lock issues to contributors(?) so that the issues don't just become a dump ground of drive-by comments like "can't wait for this feature" or "any news?" type of comments that flood inboxes of those who want to follow specific issues for actual news. It would really help the signal to noise ratio for those interested in actual progress on issues, or at least productive discussion between those working on the issue directly.
