This was an issue very very long ago, like when I first did GTK ever. There is a function call I called early on (with a comment) that disables this behavior. Perhaps:
For what its worth, this isn't happening for me, so it may be a recent Adw/Gtk bug/feature (who ever knows, they seem to flip flop behavior every patch release):

I haven't been able to reproduce reliably, but here is a video which should describe the issue. If I push the up arrow key, my focus moves into the headerbar, which is not what I want. I want to go through my shell history.
