this sounds alot like the undo operation which lets you restore actions with a specified timeout. This does not currently work on linux but the usecase you provided I feel like a undo is way better than starting a new shell.
I don't think this has much merit what benefit does nuking the shell and restarting quick provide that isn't solved by undo / or supporting fast window opening (which GTK does alot better now with the systemd service) its the same process if the fast window opening is happening and you don't seem to care about the previous contents if you are "nuking" the previous shell the twm users to always compare the startup time to foot seems to enjoy |

Similar to #8382
Windows Terminal has a feature where when a terminal process exits (successfully or not) and the profile isn't set to automatically close the pane, it displays a message: "You can now close this terminal with ^D or Enter to restart." Ctrl+D closes the pane, and Enter restarts the terminal with a new shell instance When the terminal has exited, ctrl+D to close pane, Enter to restart terminal by sotteson1 · Pull Request #14060 · microsoft/terminal
It's a feature I personally very much enjoy. Mainly for quickly nuking a shell process and quickly starting a fresh one.
I guess I can achieve something similar myself by setting up
but maybe this is useful enough to be a feature or someone else has a better idea of what I could do.
Proposed Behavior
When a shell exits in Ghostty and
wait-after-command=trueor similar:Use Case
Prevents accidental terminal closure when exiting shells while allowing quick shell restarts without manually reopening tabs. Particularly useful when accidentally exiting a shell or when repeatedly testing shell configurations.

Similar to existing
wait-after-commandfeature, but adds the ability to restart rather than only allowing close.Beta Was this translation helpful? Give feedback.
