Last active tab action

I was thinking about eliminating tmux from my workflow and started porting tmux's keybinds to pure Ghostty. I have managed to port almost all of my keybinds, except one that navigates to the last active tab (in tmux, the default keybind is Ctrl-b l). This command switches back to the tab that was active right before the current one.

Ghostty already has last_tab, but it navigates to the tab that is last by order. I would like to propose adding a new action, perhaps called last_active_tab, which would replicate the tmux behavior described above.

It indeed sounds like #2393 but there are some major differences. #2393 proposes to keep track of order in which tabs were used so that we can cycle through them in that order. What I propose is to keep track of only one tab that was used before the current one.

For example, imagine we have tabs [1, 2, 3], with the current tab being 1. If I switch to tab 3, then the last active tab is 1. If I then switch back to tab 1, the last active tab becomes 3 (forming a back-and-forth cycle).

In tmux this is very convenient when you want to toggle quickly between two tabs (e.g. vim and logs), and then later between another pair of tabs (e.g. vim and a shell).

This also happens with a stack like behavior a stack just happens to track more tabs than the last one it tracks the last N.

with a stack if I had [1, 2, 3] then swap to 3 the stack is now [3, 1, 2] swap back to 1 its [1, 3, 2] the "last active tab" will always be the second in the list

Oh, yeah, now I see. I guess this discussion is a duplicate then.

For me this is probably the feature that is missing the most. I am so used to cycling between two items with one keystroke. I use it for window switching, for tab switching in the web browser (Arc supports this kind of), and with terminal tabs.

It would be great to add it Ghostty.
