SysMLv2-Interoperability-TankModel

SysML v2 textual models and interoperability scripts with Simulink (MgS tool), from my Master's thesis on evaluating the SysML v2 language for Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) in aerospace applications.

Overview

SysML v1 — the standard modeling language for systems engineering — is limited by semantic ambiguity and poor interoperability with external simulation tools. SysML v2 replaces it with a textual representation grounded in formal semantics and a standardized API, aimed specifically at fixing that integration gap.

This thesis puts that claim to the test with a real case study: modeling a liquid hydrogen tank for electric aircraft using SysML v2, and verifying whether the model can be practically synchronized with Simulink to check system requirements against simulation results — using open-source SysML v2 tooling.

The MBSE methodology follows three stages, all captured in the model: Requirement Modeling, Operational Analysis, and Functional Analysis.

Key findings

  • SysML v2's textual syntax and formal semantics meaningfully reduce the ambiguity that made SysML v1 hard to exchange between tools.
  • Interoperability with Simulink was achieved via a commercial software bridge (MgS), enabling post-simulation verification of specific requirements directly against the SysML v2 model.
  • In practice, bidirectional synchronization between SysML v2 and Simulink remains complex, and current open-source/commercial tooling still shows real limitations for industrial-scale use.
