New screenshots?

The current screenshots in the repo are showing the default terminal colors of the old ubuntu terminal. Some distro pages like this look better imho and show different popular configurations too (like borders)

Perhaps the current screenshots should be replaced by new ones showing different common configurations instead?

I am open to the idea of updating the screenshots in the README.md, however I don't want to just steal existing screenshots online without permission. Submissions are welcome though, so if you want to provide some then I can consider using them.

It would be nice if the following features could be used for such screenshots:

• borders (drawbox/borderfmt/roundbox)
• cursors (cursoractivefmt/cursorparentfmt/cursorpreviewfmt)
• status bars (promptfmt/statfmt/rulerfmt)
• file colors
• file icons
• image previews

TBH I have hoped other screenshots could represent these features. I have tried increasing font of terminal emulator text before making the screenshot but then the preview image did not take up the whole space after font increase. I can retry with same features and bigger text, but I am not willing to bother with icons and colors, sorry.

I do want to showcase the various features available, but at the same time I do not want to have too many screenshots as it will be off-putting for new users. Maybe it's fine to have one showing an image preview, and another one which contains the other features.

There's also the question of where to physically host the screenshot images - I'm uninclined to add them directly to the repo. For reference, the current screenshots (not added by me) are stored on Imgur:

The new screenshots show nicely how lf can look like but I am questioning if we should add one more as the first one to show a default configuration. Not only does that align with what new users will actually see out of the box, the original creators also intended lf to be minimal. Showing a minimal configuration as the first screenshot would align with that much better. Something like the first tty example above.

If a user wants to see what lf looks like out of the box, then they should just simply install it. I could consider adding a screenshot for the default settings if new users actually request it, but from my experience new users are generally more interested in what features are available in lf (and how it can solve their needs), as opposed to what it looks like in its default state.

Having the default UI shown makes sense to me as some people want to see how it looks before installing. However, the screenshot with the image preview is pretty close to the default look (rulerfmt and hidden are probably the only options changed for the UI) so that may be enough.

Perhaps we should add a link to the repo to a new "Show and tell" kind of discussion where a larger collection of configurations can be displayed. Personally the look and feel of an application is very much relevant for me to give try it, so showing more possible variants may be useful for new users.

If show and tell is a markdown document, maybe it could contain the config below images in an collapsed section to make it easy to see relevant options?

You should start a new show and tell in the discussions section (or alternatively a new page in the wiki) where users can post their setups. If it becomes popular enough, I will consider adding a link to it to the README.md.
