Scopes explanation

Hi, I've scoured the docs for a true explanation of the understanding of Scopes. I can't tell if they split out the arrays for one layer from each of the collections defined for the entire model, or if they just house collections themselves, etc. The documentation doesn't appear to say anything concrete about how they work.
