I've searched the discussions and while there are some discussions that touch on similar topics, I didn't feel they were close enough and didn't want to hijack that discussion.
We've moved from our old inventory platform to self-hosted Snipe-IT.
Our Use Case
We’re the central IT support for a county, managing all county tech assets for elected offices and departments funded by the County’s General Fund. We’d like department heads, elected officials, or their appointed staff to have access to view their own tech asset inventory.
We also manage other departments that are fully funded by grants or other non-General Fund sources (e.g., permit sales). They own their own equipment, but we still set it up, deploy it, and maintain it.
In total, we support 39 different departments or elected offices. Each has unique software needs with very few commonalities, so it’s easiest to think of each one as its own “Company.”
All tech assets are purchased through our department, even those belonging to non-General Fund departments. For those, we bill out our services. As assets are received, we enter them into Snipe-IT and check them out either to end users or to locations.
What We’ve Tried
Full Multiple Company Support enabled:
Set each office/department as a separate company.
Issues:
End users couldn’t request devices.
We couldn’t check devices out.
Devices couldn’t be moved between departments.
Full Multiple Company Support disabled:
Now users can’t log in and see only their department’s assets.
Active Directory is integrated, and managers are set correctly in AD.
Manager View works (they can see devices assigned to their employees, but on an individual employee basis).
But if we give a group asset view access, they see all county assets.
What We’d Like to Achieve
Track every county tech asset in Snipe-IT for its full lifecycle.
Allow each department or elected office to:
View only their own assets.
Access a view similar to the admin Assets page.
Support requests/checkouts for shared equipment (laptops, projectors, etc.).
Assign designated users to *-department managers groups that grant access only to their department’s assets.
Let non-General Fund departments view their assets, run reports, etc.
Questions
Are we hitting a feature limitation in Snipe-IT, or is there a setting I’ve overlooked—a “magic button” that would let us do this?
Maybe there’s a better way to get the results we’re looking for?
It’s possible I’ve overlooked some settings in the documentation, I'm human after all.
