Merge Asset Models

I've recently started working at a new place that uses Snipe, and it's in a very messy state.

Is there any way that i can quickly and easily merge Asset Models together? They have a lot of models they have created that are duplicates of each other, but each asset model only has 1 asset attached to it.

If this isn't a feature then i will have to endure the pain :D

Hi there - sorry you’ve inherited a bit of a mess.

How many assets/models are we talking about here?

If it’s not completely bonkers, I’d prolly rename the models you don’t want to keep, bulk edit the assets within those “bad” models to use the “good” models, and then delete the bad ones.

We're looking at 6,200 assets and 525+ models.

What it looks like has happened is that theres been users who have tried to use Snipe and didn't know how it worked. So every time they added an asset, they made a new model each time.... which is not ideal.

The merge here could get tricky because if they are slightly different, you won't know which is the "real" one (or at least the one you want to keep as the real one.)

Especially since they have to have made them somewhat different, since you can't create two models with the same name + model number.

Yeah im quite sure they have modified them some how so i genuienly dont know what is the correct one.
My theory was there could be a possiblity of ticking the ones that i wanted to merge, pick one as master and do it that way. But im quite sure i cant do that so i guess its just gona be a long process for me :D

Well there isn't currently a way to merge models that way, but my concern would be that if we did make that, some models might be slightly different to the point where you might not notice (slightly different model number, different fieldset, etc), and then data goes bad because of the merge. (If you don't know which is the correct one, anything we write won't have any way to know either.) 😭

You should definitely remove the ability for those users to create asset models tho, to prevent it from happening again

If your models only differ by extra symbols at the end of model name, you could use ADVANCED SEARCH to filter these out and then change model for all of these with bulk edit. Or you could export your items into XLSX file, change model and import that information (just select Update) into Snipe-IT. Basically, you only need two columns: 'Asset Tag' and 'Model'.
