Asset Import Issue

Good morning! I just installed a fresh install of Snipe-IT this morning using the Installer. It installed version 8.0.4 build 17704.

The issue that I'm having is when I try to import assets I receive the following error:
Error uploading file. Please check that there are no empty rows and that no column names are duplicated.

I have even tried downloading the sample asset upload file and it receives the same error.

I saw another ticket that had the same issue and it was resolved by running:
composer install --no-dev

This is completely updated ubuntu installation, fresh Snipe-IT installation, and all dependencies have been installed from the installer itself. Any ideas?

Hi - sorry you're having trouble. As mentioned in the docs, we need a stack trace and browser console errors in order to help you.

You can do one of the following, per the docs:

1. Tail the log file and trigger the error, providing us with whatever new information appears in the log file when the error occurs. More information is available in the documentation.
2. Provide the contents of your storage/logs/laravel.log. Please do not attach files, just paste in the log lines that occur when you trigger the error. It's okay if they're long, but re-triggering the error (
3. For systems NOT exposed to the internet only: Turn APP_DEBUG=true and then trigger the error and show us what's on the screen. Debug mode can expose sensitive information that you do not want the world to see.

If this error is occurring within the web UI, you should also check your browser console logs.

Hey thanks for the quick reply! To provide a few more details, I am using Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS and using Mozilla Firefox 129.0.2.

I have tried a few different things based on the links you sent. As for your suggested:

1. I tried tailing the laravel.log file and no new files are added when I try to upload.

3. This system is exposed to the internet so I can't do this one.

However based on the documentation I tried a few things as well.
My browser error code is telling me that it's a 500 internal error. I've copied the console:

Based on the Common Issues documentation, I ran the composer dump-autoload which gave me the following:

Hi there - I see two things here:

The stream or file "/var/www/html/snipeit/storage/logs/laravel.log" could not be opened in append mode: Failed to open stream: Permission denied

That means your log file can't be written to by the user you're running composer dump as, which can cause strange, unexpected behavior.

This one is particularly concerning, since it means it's not finding a record in the settings table. I'm honestly not sure how you'd get to that place.

I'm not sure either. Like I said both are fresh installs (with an * on the OS part). I am doing this in a virtual machine and cloning a working base machine that I have. I keep it completely up to date. So I'm not sure. I will try a brand new install this afternoon when I get home (OS and snipeIT), and see what happens. I'll update with results.

Normally, when you don't have a record in the settings table (or a single user in the users table), you'll get kicked to /setup to allow you to create one.

To be honest, I'm not sure what the deal is with thesettings table. I actually have two users in SnipeIT. The first was created during /setup configuration, and the second was created while signed in as the first.

I can fully sign in to both accounts.

So during lunch I did a completely from scratch install of Ubuntu and snipe-it. I'm getting the same error.

For the permission issue on the file what right level should it have? Chmod 755?

UPDATE
I ended up having to sudo chmod 766 /var/www/html/snipeit/storage/logs/laravel.log. I am now able to import. However, I do believe there may be something in the install script that isn't assigning the correct permissions. As I mentioned I did this on a completely clean OS install to test. Hopefully that helps prevent issues in the future! I will leave this issue open to ensure you can verify the install script, but I am working now! Feel free to close if you find nothing wrong with the installer.

We were running into this same exact issue. We enabled debug mode to further troubleshoot, however, after enabling it the issue was gone and we could successfully import again. We turned debug mode off and imports still work successfully.

That's interesting. I tried enabling debug mode and experienced no change in behavior. Did you also install through the installation script?

Thanks for this! It was an issue where the user was in the webserver group, but now vice versa, so when the log file was owned by the user, the webserver couldn't write to it.

I've fixed it here: #16894

and filed an issue to hopefully surface such issues rather than having them gets swallowed and report misleading errors: #16893
