Join School Flow Implementation

Implementation Date: 2026-02-16 Status: ✅ Complete & Production Ready Build Status: ✅ Passing


Overview

Implemented a seamless join school flow that allows existing users to join additional schools on the multi-tenant platform. Users can be members of multiple schools and switch between them easily.

Key Features:

  • Automatic redirect to join page when visiting a school you're not a member of
  • One-click join process
  • Multi-school membership support
  • Tenant switcher in navigation
  • Session refresh for immediate access

🎯 Features Implemented

1. Join School Page

Route: /join-school

Features:

  • Detects if user is already a member (shows "already enrolled" message)
  • Displays list of user's other school memberships
  • Shows school information and benefits
  • One-click join button
  • Automatic session refresh after joining
  • Redirects to student dashboard after successful join

User States:

State 1: Not Authenticated

User visits school-a.lms.com/join-school
→ Redirect to /auth/login?next=/join-school
→ After login, return to join page

State 2: Not a Member

2. Automatic Redirect (Middleware)

When it triggers:

  • User is authenticated
  • User visits a subdomain (school-a.lms.com)
  • User is NOT a member of that tenant
  • Path is not /join-school

Flow:

User visits school-a.lms.com/dashboard
    ↓
Middleware checks tenant membership
    ↓
No membership found
    ↓
Redirect to school-a.lms.com/join-school
    ↓
User clicks "Join School"
    ↓
Added to tenant_users table
    ↓
Session refreshed (JWT updated)
    ↓
Redirect to dashboard
    ↓
Access granted

3. Multi-School Support

Users can:

  • Be a member of multiple schools simultaneously
  • Have different roles in each school (student in one, teacher in another)
  • Switch between schools using the tenant switcher
  • See all their schools in the navigation

Data Model:

Purpose: Main join school page

Features:

  • Checks authentication (redirects to login if needed)
  • Checks existing membership (shows already-joined message)
  • Displays current school info
  • Lists user's other school memberships
  • Renders join form

2. components/join-school-form.tsx

Purpose: Join button and benefits display

Features:

  • Shows school benefits (4 key points)
  • Loading state during join process
  • Error handling and display
  • Success redirect to dashboard

Join Process:

1. Insert into tenant_users:
   - tenant_id: current tenant
   - user_id: current user
   - role: student
   - status: active

2. Update user metadata:
   - preferred_tenant_id: current tenant

3. Refresh session:
   - Gets new JWT with updated tenant_id claim

4. Redirect to /dashboard/student

Error Handling:

  • Duplicate membership (code 23505) → "Already a member"
  • Other errors → "Failed to join. Please try again."
  • Network errors → "An unexpected error occurred"

3. app/actions/join-school.ts

Purpose: Server actions for school management

Functions:

Logic:

  • Only check for non-default tenants (subdomains)
  • Skip check if already on /join-school page
  • Query tenant_users for active membership
  • Redirect if no membership found

🔄 User Flows

Flow 1: New User Joins School

1. User signs up at school-a.lms.com/auth/sign-up
   → Creates account
   → Automatically added to school-a tenant_users
   → Redirects to dashboard
   ✓ Success (handled by signup)

2. Same user visits school-b.lms.com
   → Already authenticated
   → Not a member of school-b
   → Middleware redirects to /join-school
   → User clicks "Join School B"
   → Added to school-b tenant_users
   → Session refreshed
   → Redirects to dashboard
   ✓ Now member of both schools

Flow 2: Existing User Switches Schools

1. User logged into school-a.lms.com
   → Dashboard showing school-a courses

2. User clicks tenant switcher in navigation
   → Sees list: "Math Academy (current)", "Science School"
   → Clicks "Science School"
   → Updates preferred_tenant_id
   → Refreshes session
   → Redirects to science-school.lms.com/dashboard
   ✓ Now viewing school-b

Flow 3: User Tries to Access School Without Membership

1. User types school-c.lms.com in browser
   → Not a member of school-c
   → Middleware intercepts
   → Redirects to school-c.lms.com/join-school

2. User sees join page
   → "You're already a member of: School A, School B"
   → Information about School C
   → "Join School C" button

3. User clicks join
   → Added to school-c tenant_users
   → Session refreshed
   → Redirects to dashboard
   ✓ Can now access school-c

🔒 Security Implementation

Multi-Layer Protection

Layer 1: Middleware Check

  • Prevents direct SQL injection
  • Role = student enforced for self-service joins

Isolation Guarantees

Tenant Isolation:

  • Each school's data is fully isolated
  • User can only see courses/content for schools they've joined
  • No cross-tenant data leaks

Role Isolation:

  • Self-service joins always create 'student' role
  • Only super admins can create 'teacher' or 'admin' roles
  • Prevents privilege escalation

Session Isolation:

  • JWT claims include current tenant_id
  • Session refresh required after joining
  • Ensures immediate access with correct permissions

💡 Use Cases

Use Case 1: Student Takes Multiple Programs

Scenario:

  • Maria is a student learning programming
  • She's enrolled at "Code Academy" for web development
  • She wants to also learn data science at "Data School"

Flow:

1. Maria visits data-school.lms.com
2. Redirected to /join-school
3. Sees message: "You're already a member of Code Academy"
4. Clicks "Join Data School"
5. Now has access to both schools
6. Can switch between them using tenant switcher

Result:

  • Maria has two active memberships
  • Can access courses from both schools
  • Can track progress separately
  • Can earn certificates from both

Use Case 2: Teacher Works at Multiple Schools

Scenario:

  • John is a math teacher
  • He teaches at "High School A" and "High School B"
  • Admin at each school has added him as a teacher

Flow:

1. John logs in at school-a.lms.com
   → Role: teacher (added by admin)
   → Can create courses at School A

2. John visits school-b.lms.com
   → Already authenticated
   → Has membership (added by admin)
   → Role: teacher
   → Can create courses at School B

3. John switches between schools
   → Uses tenant switcher in navbar
   → Each school shows only their courses
   → Maintains teacher role at both

Result:

  • John has two teacher memberships
  • Can manage courses independently at each school
  • Revenue tracked separately per school
  • No data mixing between schools

Use Case 3: Platform Migration

Scenario:

  • "Language Center" migrates from old LMS
  • 500 existing students
  • Want to onboard everyone quickly

Flow:

1. Send email to all students:
   "Visit language-center.lms.com to access your courses"

2. Students visit link
   → See "Join Language Center" page
   → One-click join
   → Immediate access

3. Admin manually enrolls students in courses
   (or uses bulk enrollment tool)

4. Students can start learning immediately

Result:

  • Fast onboarding (no complex signup)
  • Students already have platform accounts
  • Reuse existing credentials
  • Smooth migration experience

Test 1: Join Flow as New User

1. Sign up at school-a.lms.com/auth/sign-up

4. Check: tenant_users has entry for school-a

7. Click "Join School B"

1. Login as user with memberships in school-a and school-b
2. Navigate to school-a.lms.com/dashboard
3. Click tenant switcher in navbar
4. Should see both schools listed
5. Click "School B"
6. Should redirect to school-b.lms.com/dashboard
7. Verify courses shown are from school-b only

3. Should redirect to school-c.lms.com/join-school
4. Do NOT click join
