<p>Web accessibility is essential for people with disabilities but useful for many more. Learn about some of the accessibility considerations and how they benefit everyone in different situations.</p>

<h2 id="what">What is Video Captions?</h2>
<p>All audio that is played together with visual content needs to be captioned. This includes video and animations. Captions are a text form of everything that is spoken in the audio (subtitles), and of important audio content. This includes information about who is speaking if it is not visible, any sound effects, music, laughter, and so on. Captions are synchronized with the visual content playing.</p>
<h2 id="who">Who depends on this feature?</h2>
<ul>
<li>People who are deaf and cannot hear the audio;</li>
<li>People who are hard of hearing (often legally deaf) and cannot hear certain types of content;</li>
<li>People with some forms of dyslexia and other cognitive and learning disability, who need to see and hear the text to better understand it.</li>
</ul>
<h2 id="others">What are the additional benefits?</h2>
<ul>
<li>Content can be used in loud environments where you cannot hear the audio;</li>
<li>Content can be used in silent environments where you cannot use audio;</li>
<li>Content can be better understood by people hearing and seeing the information, for example people who are less fluent in the language spoken.</li>
<li>Content can be more easily transcribed using the captions, which also improved indexing for search engines.</li>
</ul>
<h2 id="action">What needs to happen for this to work?</h2>
<p>Captions need to be made available together with pre-recorded and live video content. Voice recognition software can be of great help for simple videos. Sometimes voice recognition software is built into the computer or the social media platform, such as YouTube. For many languages there are also captioning services that are quite affordable.</p>
