Can you add buttons and a rotary encoder for volume/mute control?

I want to build a USB sound card with volume/mute controls and a rotary encoder. After carefully reading the project description, I discovered there's no such interface for buttons or rotary encoders.
Could you help me add such an interface? I think it would be very useful.

This project already supports USB audio volume control by the host application playing the sound stream. So it doesn't make sense to have another control on the device. That's effectively putting two volume controls in series. No, it's very useful. Just like a mouse can control volume on a computer, a keyboard would still be better with volume shortcut keys. I'm planning to use your open source solution to build a fully digital amplifier. A typical amplifier would have a cool knob for volume control.

Also, my idea is to use this project's volume control, mute button, and rotary encoder to control the volume on my computer/phone. It's like having several volume shortcut keys.
