Patch Tracking

Every patch carried in master must be classified. The goal is to avoid accumulating patches: either submit fixes upstream or explicitly declare them intentionally local.

Last reconciled with the tree: upstream/master 6dab8beb89, dev re-checked after the 2026-08-01 cleanup. Run tools/patch-scan.py --ref upstream/master — the default master ref is a local branch that lags behind a fetch. Nothing is untracked in either direction, but as of 2026-08-03 the scan reports 2 stale rows: the two devel/libcec gcc-16 rows under "Pending upstream submission" name patch files that are in neither tree (packages/devel/libcec/patches/ is empty and libcec is now on 8.1.3) — resubmit or drop those rows. The cleanup dropped dev's libwebsockets revert (dev is on 5.0.0 with the const patch, same as master), the 11 carried libtool commits (dev re-landed 2.6.2), all 12 post-0.11.1 libaacs patches (dev is on 0.12.0, unpatched) and the mesa addrlib patch — those rows are gone. Dev now carries 36 patches that master does not (35 at the reconcile, plus the x265 asm-objects fix added 2026-08-03); master carries 2 that dev does not (avahi 0001-dbus, grub 0001-build-fix, both annotated on their rows). No "drop on a release past X" threshold has been reached.

addons/addon-depends/comskip arg3.patch Rudi Heitbaum — build against argtable3 instead of the dead argtable2 (comskip's PKG_DEPENDS_TARGET already uses argtable3); dev only, no upstream PR yet, and needs renaming to the ####-subject.patch convention

network/wsdd-native 0001-dlopen-libsystemd-by-soname-not-configure-time-path.patch Rudi Heitbaum — find_library() bakes the configure-time absolute path into the binary as the dlopen() argument, so a cross build loads a sysroot path that does not exist on the target and the daemon exits under --systemd; submitted as PR #27 and rejected — upstream keeps the absolute path deliberately and directs packagers to set -DHAVE_SYSTEMD=ON -DLIBSYSTEMD_SO=libsystemd.so.0 instead, which works, so the patch should be dropped in favour of those cmake options
addons/addon-depends/ttyd-depends/libwebsockets 0001-tls-openssl-build-with-the-constified-X509-name-acce.patch Rudi Heitbaum — OpenSSL 4 constified X509_get_subject_name()/X509_get_issuer_name(), breaking lws's own -Werror -Wignored-qualifiers TLS build; unfixed on upstream main; to submit to warmcat/libwebsockets. Carried with libwebsockets 5.0.0 on both master and dev, which also needs -DLWS_WITH_HTTP3=OFF since 5.0.0 otherwise force-selects GnuTLS

addons/service/tvheadend43 0004-transcoding-init-the-filter-sink-after-setting-its-o.patch Rudi Heitbaum — avfilter_graph_create_filter() initializes the sink it creates and libavutil 60 (FFmpeg 8.0) made av_opt_set*() reject non-runtime options on an initialized object, so every buffersink format option fails and transcoding never starts (tvheadend issue 1764); allocate the sink with avfilter_graph_alloc_filter() and avfilter_init_dict() it once the options are applied; to submit to tvheadend/tvheadend
addons/service/tvheadend43 0005-transcoding-set-the-sink-formats-through-the-array-o.patch Rudi Heitbaum — libavfilter 12 (FFmpeg 9.0) removed buffersink's int-list/string format options, and from 10.6.100 the deprecated audio ones are ignored once the layout is set as a string, so set pixel_formats/sample_formats/samplerates/channel_layouts with av_opt_set_array(); to submit to tvheadend/tvheadend

addons/addon-depends/ffmpegx-depends/x265 0001-cmake-generate-asm-objects-from-a-single-target.patch Rudi Heitbaum — the asm objects are listed as sources of both x265-static and x265-shared, so the generating rule is written into each target and a parallel build can run two compilers writing the same object file; a link then reads a truncated object (ld.gold: error: p2s-sve.S.o: file is empty) and the aarch64 addon build fails intermittently. Project patches — projects/, outside patch-scan's reach

tools/patch-scan.py only walks packages/, so nothing under projects/ is reconciled by it or was tracked here at all. The Coral Dev Board set is the one body of work large enough to need rows. It is dev only — 21 patches under projects/NXP/devices/iMX8/patches/linux/, all against linux 7.2-rc5, applying with no fuzz. Full working notes are in NXP.md; this table is the submission state.

Patch Status Notes
0001 PCI: imx6: Avoid dereferencing a NULL clock name submitted sent standalone 2026-08-02, Acked-by: Richard Zhu (NXP) 2026-08-03. Carries Fixes: d8574ce57d76 and Cc: stable, so it should not wait for the merge window. Awaiting a PCI maintainer
0002 dt-bindings: pci: fsl,imx6q-pcie: Add extref clock submitted series 1/3. Awaiting a direction from Frank Li - see 0003
0003 PCI: imx6: Select the PCIe REF_CLK source on i.MX8MQ submitted series 2/3. Needs a v2 and the shape is not ours to choose. Frank Li agrees enable_ext_refclk is the right direction for i.MX95 alignment but flagged a real backward-compatibility break: on i.MX8MQ the absence of "extref" is ambiguous, meaning both "existing devicetree, reference on the pad" and "this board drives REF_CLK from the internal PLL", so clearing REF_USE_PAD regresses any devicetree without the new clock. 0004 covers all five in-tree boards, leaving old-DTB-with-new-kernel and out-of-tree devicetrees exposed. A new devicetree property was tried in the NXP tree and rejected, so we asked Frank how he wants the internal-PLL case described rather than proposing a shape (replied 2026-08-08)
0004 arm64: dts: imx8mq: Declare the PCIe extref clock submitted series 3/3, 5 boards. May become unnecessary depending on 0003's v2
0005 ASoC: rt5645: Make the Kconfig symbol user selectable in mainline, patch dropped 588852647b81, landed 2026-08-08 via broonie/sound. Verified: SND_SOC_RT5645 now reads tristate "Realtek RT5645/RT5650 Codec" in Linus's tree. Dropped from the tree on linux-7.2, whose kernel is now 7.2 final and so carries it, which also satisfies 0010's dependency from the base. It cannot be dropped on a tree still at rc5 or rc6 - verified, 7.2-rc5 reads a bare tristate while 7.2-rc7 reads the prompt: SND_SOC_RT5645 goes back to being promptless, olddefconfig then silently drops CONFIG_SND_SOC_RT5645=y and the analog card disappears with no error. The hash is now a mainline one, so it may be cited in a commit message
0006 phanbell keep the GPU rail on (buck3 always-on) submitted v2 posted to the imx list 2026-08-08 as part of the 5-patch "Google Coral Dev Board enablement" series; buck3 is already in mainline phanbell
0007 phanbell do not hardcode a cooling state submitted v2 posted to the imx list 2026-08-08 as part of the 5-patch "Google Coral Dev Board enablement" series; map1 is in mainline phanbell, THERMAL_NO_LIMIT comes via imx8mq.dtsi
0008 phanbell enable i2c2 and i2c3 submitted v2 posted to the imx list 2026-08-08 as part of the 5-patch "Google Coral Dev Board enablement" series; depends on nothing
0009 phanbell mux the 32 kHz reference clock pad submitted v2 posted to the imx list 2026-08-08 as part of the 5-patch "Google Coral Dev Board enablement" series; the one hog entry with a real signal behind it
0010 phanbell rt5645 analog audio submitted v2 posted to the imx list 2026-08-08 as part of the 5-patch "Google Coral Dev Board enablement" series; needs 0005 and 0008 (appends into its &i2c3). v2 adds avdd-supply/cpvdd-supply with a fixed reg_audio_1v8, and the "IN1P", "Headphone Mic" route, both from Frank Li's review of v1; CHECK_DTBS is clean. The cpu dai deliberately carries no clocks - naming one bypasses fsl_sai_set_mclk_rate() and breaks 44.1 kHz. Moved ahead of the pcie patches in 30b2660e3f so the submittable set is a prefix
0011 phanbell enable pcie0 and pcie1 pending needs 0003 - pristine imx8mq_pcie_init_phy() sets REF_USE_PAD unconditionally, and pcie0 takes REF_CLK from the internal PLL, so it needs that made conditional. 0002 documents the "extref" name pcie1 uses. Carries the VPH rail and reg_wlan
0012 phanbell QCA6174 Bluetooth on uart2 pending needs 0011 for reg_wlan - the QCA6174 is a combo part and WL_REG_ON (GPIO3_IO11) powers the Bluetooth side as much as the wifi radio
0014 ASoC: rt5645: Perform the initial jack detect at probe in mainline, patch dropped Landed between 7.2-rc7 and 7.2 final - verified absent from both 7.2-rc5 and 7.2-rc7, and present in 7.2 final at sound/soc/codecs/rt5645.c:3498, byte-identical to the patch down to the comment. Dropped on linux-7.2/kernel13 alongside 0005, but it must stay on any tree still at rc5 or rc6, which includes dev. The bug: any simple-audio-card user of rt5645/rt5650 with hp-detect-gpios and jd-mode = 0 is silent until the jack is physically replugged, because nothing calls rt5645_set_jack_detect() and so nothing force enables the LDO2/Mic Det Power supplies HP amp depends on. It carried no Fixes: and no Cc: stable: no in-tree DTS references realtek,rt5645, the three rt5650 boards (mt8173-elm, mt8186-corsola-squirtle/chinchou) all set realtek,jd-mode = <2>, and no DT anywhere uses hp-detect-gpios, so both conditions it tests were unmet upstream and it could not affect a released kernel
0015 PCI: dwc: Fix stray newline in the no-fixup notice pending Rudi Heitbaum — dw_pcie_parent_bus_offset() breaks its format string before the semicolon, so the "no fixup was ever needed" note is emitted as two log records and the second carries no device prefix. The three sibling messages in the same function all keep the "; " inline with a single trailing newline. Carries Fixes: 3b69e1d3815f ("PCI: dwc: Add dw_pcie_parent_bus_offset() checking and debug") - git log -S "no fixup was ever needed" over pcie-designware.c returns that one commit, so the message has read this way since it was written. No Cc: stable, it only affects the log. Not a 7.2 regression either: the same text is in 6.17.6, 7.1-rc6, 7.2-rc5, 7.2-rc7 and 7.2 final. Applies with no fuzz to 7.2-rc5, 7.2-rc7 and 7.2 final, so it can be carried on dev and on the PR branch unchanged; to submit to linux-pci
0013 phanbell 40-pin header I2S card on sai1 pending weakest of the set - a dummy card for an expansion header with linux,spdif-dit standing in for a codec that is not there. Consider keeping this one local rather than posting it
0021-0028 Cadence MHDP8501 HDMI/DP (Laurentiu Palcu, [PATCH v23 0/8]) imported 8 patches, unmerged upstream but in active review. Applies clean to 7.2-rc6, so two of the three 7.2 fixes the v20 import needed are gone - the drm_atomic_commit rename and the devm_drm_bridge_alloc conversion. The third is still needed and is now carried separately as 0034. Needs CONFIG_DRM_DISPLAY_CONNECTOR
0029 imx8mq-evk DCSS + HDMI (Lucas Stach) imported downstream, needs the MHDP series
0030 imx8mq-pico-pi DCSS + HDMI (Lukas Rusak) imported downstream, needs the MHDP series
0031 imx8mq-phanbell DCSS + HDMI pending needs the MHDP series; working on hardware
0032 drm: bridge: cadence: add HDMI audio support to MHDP8501 pending needs the MHDP series. v23 still has no audio, so this remains a real gap and is now worth posting as a follow-up to a live series rather than a dead one. Reworked for v23: bridge_to_mhdp() not bridge->driver_private, which v23 leaves NULL since it allocates the bridge with devm_drm_bridge_alloc()
0033 phanbell HDMI audio card on sai4 pending needs 0032 and 0031; working - 44.1 kHz plays and Kodi playback is fine
0034 drm: bridge: cadence: use system_percpu_wq for the MHDP pending the one 7.2 fix the v23 MHDP import still needs: cdns_mhdp8501_irq_thread() queues its debounce work with mod_delayed_work(system_wq, ...) and 7.2 marks system_wq __WQ_DEPRECATED, so the hotplug warning returns on the first HDMI plug event. One line. Worth sending to Laurentiu as a follow-up to v23

Where this set lives. The numbering in these tables is the linux-7.2 branch, which is the current state - kernel13 carries the same set and is what build devel-20260821133825-25429bf was cut from. Its kernel is now 7.2 final: 0005 and 0014 are both dropped because the base carries them, the MHDP series is at v23 as 0021-0028, 0034 carries the one 7.2 fix that import still needs, and CONFIG_DRM_DISPLAY_CONNECTOR=y. dev still has the older shape - kernel 7.2-rc5, 0005 and 0014 both still required, and the v20 MHDP import as 0021-0026 - so read these tables against linux-7.2, not against dev. 0015 is the exception: it is new, it lives on dev, and it applies unchanged to every 7.2 so it can be carried on either branch.

Submit only a prefix. Every patch's diff context is generated against the state its predecessors leave, so a prefix always applies and an arbitrary subset may not — 30b2660e3f exists because the audio patch had been built on top of the pcie ones and applied with fuzz without them. The order now matches the plan:

patches when
00060010 now; the kernel carries 588852647b81, so the Kconfig half comes from the base and 0010 needs only 0008
00110012 when 0003 lands
0013 keep local; last so it never blocks a prefix
00210034 blocked on the MHDP series

Verified with git apply, which refuses fuzz and so is the real test for git am: 00010014 apply in order, 00060010 apply to a pristine imx8mq-phanbell.dts, 00110012 apply on top, and 0013 on top of that. 0015 touches pcie-designware.c, which nothing else in the set touches, so it carries no ordering dependency either way.

Three of these dependencies are functional rather than textual, and reading patch context does not find that class at all. 0012 applies to a tree without 0011 and then fails to download firmware, because nothing has enabled WL_REG_ON. 0010 applied without 0005 would describe a codec whose driver cannot be enabled, since SND_SOC_RT5645 was promptless upstream until 588852647b81. 0011's dependency on 0003 is the same shape: it is about what REF_USE_PAD defaults to, so nothing in the diff hints at it.

0008 through 0013 were rebuilt for upstream in 3d25559614. The old 0008 bundled five unrelated changes; what came out of it, and what was dropped as downstream-only or certain to be rejected, is recorded in that commit message. The pmic IRQ_TYPE_LEVEL_LOWGPIO_ACTIVE_LOW retune noted here previously is one of the things dropped, so that question is settled.

Booted clean on 7.2-rc6, build 20260804161745, which exercises both things the rework changed rather than merely rearranged:

  • WL_REG_ON went from a gpio-hog to a regulator-fixed consumed as pcie0's vpcie-supply. ath10k enumerates the QCA6174 and loads firmware, and QCA setup on UART is completed, so both halves of the combo part are powered. The intended ordering change is visible: pcie0's host bridge appears at 0.883 s where it used to appear at 0.746 s, i.e. the probe now defers on the regulator instead of racing the hog.
  • the pmic interrupt went back to IRQ_TYPE_LEVEL_LOW. bd718xx-pwrkey registers and the boot proceeds with no interrupt storm, which was the one way the vendor's edge-triggered value could have been deliberate.

Audio on the three cards is complete and verified as of 2026-08-06, which took four commits beyond the enablement patches - b07e398f62 (the mixer path is muted at reset), 1a5c9410ec/0014 (nothing performs the initial jack detect), 869864bf5a (neither audio PLL family was declared) and 1896dce677 (the SAI was never marked as the system clock provider, so the mclk rate was never set at all). All three cards now play 44.1 kHz natively and 48 kHz. Working notes in NXP.md.

Dropping ecspi1 and ten of the eleven hogged pins broke nothing, and hoggrp still resolves with its single remaining pin.

Needs triage

Patches in these packages have not yet been classified. Each patch should be assigned one of the status codes above:

(all packages triaged)

Patch file naming convention

All patch files under packages/ (except packages/mediacenter/kodi and packages/linux/) must follow:

####-subject.patch

Rules

  • Number: exactly 4 digits, zero-padded (00019999); 0000 is not valid
  • Subject: git format-patch style — hyphens as word separators, no underscores, max 53 characters
  • Separator: hyphen between number and subject
  • No package name prefix — the package name is implied by the directory

Numbering

  • Sequences start at 0001 — never 0000
  • Locally-added patches use sequential numbers from 0001 with no gaps
  • Upstream PR/commit reference patches retain their original number regardless of value — numbers like 0005, 0019, 0039, 0086 are all valid if they encode an upstream reference; non-sequential gaps are intentional in these cases
  • No duplicate numbers within the same patches directory

Subject

  • Use hyphens, not underscores: fix-build-with-gcc-14 not fix_build_with_gcc_14
  • Maximum 53 characters (matches git format-patch default)
  • Derive from the git Subject: header where it is more descriptive than a hand-written label
  • Do not include the package name in the subject: 0001-fix-build.patch not 0001-pkg-fix-build.patch
  • Do not include upstream tracker/mailing-list noise (SV-12345-, [FFmpeg-devel], etc.)

Exceptions

  • packages/mediacenter/kodi — excluded from all treewide rename rules
  • packages/linux/ — excluded entirely; do not modify any patches under this tree
  • packages/linux/patches/rockchip/ and packages/linux/patches/rockchip-old/ — left with their original rockchip-NNNN- naming
  • packages/addons/addon-depends/docker/moby/patches/ — do not modify; patches maintained separately
  • packages/addons/addon-depends/podman/ — do not modify; patches maintained separately
  • packages/multimedia/ffmpeg/patches/rpi/0001-rpi.patch — do not modify; large downstream RPi patch (~24k lines)

Verification

Run rename_plan.py (repo root) to check conformance. After the 2026-08-01 dev cleanup it proposes 24 renames, all in dev-only or WIP packages (nvidia's two linux-7.2 patches, comskip arg3, glibc's yacc workaround, Python3's OpenSSL 4 backport, nss nss-10-…, avahi 229/309, mp4v2, dislocker, librespot, lz4, iwd, gasket-driver, rtmpdump, fwupd, u-boot rockchip, xorgproto, makemkv):

python3 rename_plan.py # dry-run: print proposed renames + warnings
python3 rename_plan.py --execute # execute git mv commands

Patch file format

Most patches use git format-patch structure:

From <hash> Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001
From: Author Name <email>
Date: <RFC 2822 date>
Subject: [PATCH] subject line

Optional body text.

Script-generated patches (keep original diff format)

A small number of patches are regenerated from scratch by a script rather than maintained as git commits. These must stay in the format the script produces and must not be given format-patch headers:

  • packages/addons/addon-depends/docker/moby/patches/0001-user-addon-storage-location.patch — regenerated by tools/moby/gen-patches.sh (bulk sed path substitution across all .go files)
  • packages/addons/addon-depends/podman/podman-bin/patches/0002-path-changes.patch — regenerated by tools/podman-bin/gen-patches.sh (bulk sed path substitution across all .go files)

Run from the repo root: bash tools/moby/gen-patches.sh / bash tools/podman-bin/gen-patches.sh. Same convention as tools/ffmpeg/gen-patches.sh. podman-bin/patches/0001-path-changes.patch is a normal hand-maintained git patch (specific C and vendor Go changes) — it is not script-generated and must have a format-patch header.

Do not confuse these with other patches that happen to use diff -N* syntax internally. A custom hand-written patch that starts with diff -Nur lines is still a normal patch and should have a format-patch header. Only patches regenerated by gen-patches.sh should stay headerless.

Author attribution

The From: line must name the patch author, not the LibreELEC committer who imported it:

  • If the original patch file contains a raw git log block (commit <hash>\nAuthor: ...\nDate: ...), extract the author and date from that block, use the commit hash in the From <hash> line, and strip the log block from the body.
  • If the original contains BLFS-style metadata (Submitted By:, Date:, Origin:, Description:), use the submitter as author, the Date: field for the patch date, keep a concise description as body text, and strip the boilerplate fields.
  • Never use the LibreELEC committer's name/email as the patch author.
