Replacing a line appends the line below when using Shift-R with external clipboard

Whenever I copy a line from outside the editor and do:

x <Space> <Shift>-R

to select and replace using the + register, the line below the one I selected ends up appended to the replaced text.

How can I replace a line without pulling up the next line?
