This is the current Openmoji design:

In the Bliss Language system the Animals, where possible are shown in a uniform moving Right profile such as Dog & Cat following:

Note how ONE special feature is chosen and emphasized, Dog Lovers will agree about the Tail, and Cat lovers will agree
on the Paws.

You can see and search the Bliss Language on Text or Shape(s) from this (Swedish) site: https://www.xelify.se/blissdictionary/

These are strongly abstracted, child like stick figures, certainly not what OpenMoji is directly about. Also, back in the 1940's when this language was being conceived ease to write with pencil and paper was probably a continual necessary consideration....

I think the FROG makes for a fascinating Symbol because there are many ancient, and modern variations on it, and I am sure I have seen a whole set of emojis based on Frog "expressions" somewhere.

Bliss uses the following Symbol ELEMENTS for their standard Symbol:

image

From left to right: Animal (mammal), Water over Ground (Amphibious / Mud), and the Verb: To Jump

.... And this Makes Sense, but we have a number of considerations that make this symbol less than optimum:

  1. There is an overall lack of Discernment with Animals, and in this case a Toad could also be built from these sub-symbols.
  2. We are using a "Training Mode" for the very young children (as young as 3-4), so this is rather involved logic (why not, no alphabet is required)
  3. Many Animals such as Dogs, and Cats have been presented in profile, why not also the Frog?

I think the FROG is a good example for discussion because there are so many possibilities, and perhaps it can be useful to clarify the competing interests of any Symbol. After much work with Animations I have concluded that the Symbol should be easily associated with an Object (obvious as can be) but, with animations you do not want to TURN, or reposition the Animal any more than necessary, as this is not only "expensive" to animate, it is an unnecessary series of frames, that only distracts from the
association making Animation.

(Want to see nearly 100 such Animations? Please consider visiting our ILE game front end here: Funuage.org (all Animations produced by a young artist-in in the Ukraine.))

Doing a Google search on Frog yields many variations from cute to ancient, from artistic, to scientific:

Boring, and breaking the Bliss rules only carefully, but also likely to be handled with Vectors without much difficulty I
would lean toward this one:

OpenMoji already has a frog, would it make sense to start a new grouping of Images that we can share. We are currently just approaching a pre-release with a vocabulary of 100, and are looking to go public only as we approach 300 Symbols. Many of the elemental Symbols have been covered, and I will guess we will have a need for some 20 Animals just to do the first 5 stories that will soon be integrated into our ILE. Animals are the most currently pressing category, but there several more to come.

(As our ILE collects information such as Symbols Learned per hour, perhaps we can begin to measure acceptance for feedback for improving the Symbols. We are just beginning to get a better dataset with work being done in Accra, Ghana)
