Hello:

This is a new issue that just popped up this weekend when I was doing some reorg of how I use purple-presage plugin in my IRSSI client setup.

Now when I send any contact a message, I get this error, but the message still goes thru:

Error: libsignal-service sending error: Proof of type ["captcha"] required using token : XXXXXXX (token string redacted here)

I am running the latest build of purple-presage from the repo. (tag: nightly-20251026-ed01168)

I tried logging off and back on from my Signal, by removing my linux bitlbee client from my signal account, and re-logging in again with the qrencode CAPTCHA, and the error still exists.

Thank you for the report.

This happens to other clients, too – see Flare. Apparently, the Signal servers employ some sort of rate-limit to combat spam bots. I can probably use the code from Schmiddi's Flare, but adapting it to purple will require a decent amount of work. Additionally, whatever solution I come up with, I cannot test it – since I never had to submit a captcha myself. 😬

It is good that you mention IRSSI. I want to implement answering the captcha in such a way that it works with bridges.

Hello: Thank you for the quick follow-up. Yes, I use a IRC client Irssi to connect to a bitlbee server, that has your plugin installed.

I get the captcha every time I disconnect my bitlbee from my Signal account, qrencode works well to generate the QR code and then I can log in to Signal with no issues.

Let me know if you need to debug anything to fix this issue when you look at it.

How to interpret "disconnect" in this context?

• regarding the connection as in "go offline/no more internet access"?
• regarding the credentials as in "un-link and log out"?

Sorry, I wasn't being clear. I was just saying that the only way I can GET the login Captcha is if I completely log out of my Signal account from the plugin, by removing the client from my Signal app on my phone. I rarely if ever need to do this, once my purple plugin is authenticated, I never need to do this again.
I only did it now as a step to try to get rid of the rate-limit messages, which did not fix the issue.

I also should report, as of today, that the sending error has now gone away.
I can message contacts thru the plugin, and I am no longer getting the error response messages.

It looks like the error was some transitory rate-limiting, and is working fine now.

OK, well, this issue is happening for me on and off now.

I dont know if this is something you want to address, or you will just leave it for now.

I am re-opening the issue for now.
