How it looks on screenshots

Of course I dont see it displayed like that on my display for me it is not gray scaled.
The Screenshot looks gray for me no matter where i observe it.(Phone, PC)
Screenshot is tahen with hyprshot which is grim under the hood (i think)

Might be related to what I referred in #10422, but screencast with or without portal has the same issue.

I can confirm the same behavior, screenshots taken with hyprshot.

Can confirm also still happens when cm = wide and bitdepth = 10, so this is not exclusive to HDR, maybe more likely related to 10-bit vs 8-bit. Although the effect is definitely far worse on HDR.

Capture using grim -g "$(slurp)" on the left, source window on the right. Not super obvious in my crummy image, but you can see the right one is properly saturated and the left one has a rather washed out red and orange. In cm = srgb (which I think forces bitdepth = 8), screenshot has identical colours to source content.

I think this washing out might also happen when screen sharing with cm = wide (and definitely happens when screen sharing HDR).

I have the same issue with screenshots in hdr with hyprshot and grim by itself.

Interestingly, this also happens in hyprpicker which showcases (what I think is) the issue. If you use hyprpicker to hover over a black pixel, it correctly reads as #000000 whereas a pure white pixel reads as #8B8B8B or [139, 139, 139] (on my monitor/configuration). If every color channel is getting clamped to [0 - 8B] and not properly mapped to [0 - FF], that would result in the gray washed out image (I think).

checking with hyprpicker, the entire sky was mapped to pure white (#FFFFFF)

My screenshots and hyprpicker also look overexposed when sdr_max_luminance is set to anything above the default in latest git. The issue goes away if I comment out that line, but that is not an actual fix

Yep this is exactly what I'm experiencing with a very similar config. Commenting out sdr_max_luminance ensures my screenshots and screen-recordings aren't all blown out, however without that everything is pretty dark so that is not a proper work-around or fix.

OK, changing from cm = hdredid to cm = auto fixed this issue for me. My screenshots and screen recordings are no longer blown out and look just like they would with 8 bit color. So hdredid definitely doesn't play well with the auto switch to 8bit for screenshots.
