10% CPU idle. Strange case of OnlyOffice

Hi there!

I've been using Hyprland for over 6 month and I like it a lot. A few months I've been wondering, why Hyprland idles with 7-12% CPU after few hours of work and couldn't figure it out until recently.

Main suspect is OnlyOffice. Regardless of installation method (Flatpak, Appimage, deb package) if one starts the app and closes it - Hyprland will idle at 7-12% CPU until reboot (or session restart). It happens only with that particular package.

Decided to ask here first cause OnlyOffice repo would unlikely have any answers. Tried debugging with strace, looking at new processes after launching and closing the app but everything seems normal.

At the moment I use Hyprland 0.49.0 on Void Linux and the problem persists. And the above behavior is connected only with OnlyOffice package regardless of installation method. If OnlyOffice is never launched during a session - idle CPU is 0.3-1.5%.

If anyone has any insights - that would be great!

Can you check if xwayland:enabled = false (disabling xwayland) fixes the idle cpu usage?

jokes aside, tried reproducing. not happening here, any particular parts of onlyoffice that does it?

No. Just a general package from https://github.com/ONLYOFFICE/DesktopEditors. If OnlyOffice is never launched during a session - idle CPU is 0.3-1.5%. Even If you start the session, open OnlyOffice and then close it immediately - Hyprland will idle at 8-12% from now on.

Continue experimenting. And here is what I found.

1. Upon session start - everything is normal and ok. Some Xwayland processes are in background. Hyprland idle is 0.1-1.5% as usual.

2. I start OnlyOffice and close it. Now Hyprland idles at 8-13%.

3. I SIGTERM one of Xwayland processes (PID 2933 from the screenshot above)

4. Now Xwayland processes start looking like this (all new):

5. And Hyprland immediately resumes to normal 0-1.5% idle.

Xwayland does tend to send a lot of events for whatever reason at random, causing higher idle cpu usage. I disabled it on my laptop because it'd send like 600 evts/s, draining the battery faster

On my setup only OnlyOffice causes high idle CPU for Hyprland in connection to Xwayland. Running Xwayland and other x11 apps don't affect the CPU in such manner. That's why it kinda strange and restarting Xwayland process each time after I'm done working on OnlyOffice seems like a real crutch :)
