This issue is a feature proposal. Feel free to upvote (with 👍 ), comment and provide your use-cases if you're interested by this feature.

Context

The VR camera orientation is currently derived from the classic 3D view camera. After manipulating the 3D view, the terrain often appears tilted in VR, which is disturbing since users expect the ground to be roughly horizontal.

Description of the proposal

Use the real headset inclination to define the VR camera inclination (pitch and roll), while keeping the heading/azimuth from the classic 3D camera. This prevents terrain tilt in VR caused by prior 3D view manipulations.

Identified use-cases

  • VR terrain visualization with a natural, horizontal ground perception.

Implementation

Functional Implementation

  • Ignore pitch and roll from the classic 3D camera.
  • Apply headset orientation for pitch and roll.
  • Preserve the azimuth from the classic 3D camera.
